ENIAC, the first general-purpose computer is said to have dimmed the lights of Philadelphia when it was first turned on in 1946. Weighing in at 30 tons, it was never turned off for fear too many of its 18,000 vacuum tubes would burn out when restarted. Parts of it are now at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
